Chapter Twenty

Finn

A week after Emily walked away from me—again—the truth stared me in the face, and it was impossible to ignore. I was an asshole. This time it wasn’t for lusting after my best friend’s sister, it wasn’t for having her and taking her body and making it mine. This time it was for hurting Emily, for letting her walk away from me thinking the absolute worst of me, for disappointing her, for letting her think that I didn’t want her when she was the only fucking thing in the whole damn world I wanted.

I was an asshole because of instead of going after her, I let her walk away, and worse, I didn’t just let her walk away, I let another week pass before I found my balls and went after her. It was a long, torturous week without her smile and her feminine scent. It was too many hours and days without her laugh or her touch.

At first, it was easy because I spent two evenings with Shane and Willow and their growing family, enjoying home-cooked meals and the sweet sound of children laughing. But with each passing hour, it was more difficult to keep my distance from Emily, to go another day, another hour without being near her. I thought it would be good, spending time with Shane and renewing our friendship, but seeing what Shane had and how happy it made him only made me long for her with greater intensity.

I missed her so desperately that my heart ached.

Just after five, I left the GSP building and stopped for a gourmet pizza with prosciutto and olives, two really good bottles of wine, and then headed to Emily’s place with my heart in my hands. I raised my fist and knocked while my heart banged against my chest, nervous over a woman for the first time since I was about fourteen years old.

It took a few minutes, but eventually, the door opened and there Emily was, sweet and sexy in yoga pants and a tank top that did dangerous things to her small waist and lush breasts. “Finn,” she said, the usual glint in her green eyes missing. “What are you doing here?”

It was a fair question, but acid made my stomach do somersaults at her exhausted tone. “I want to talk to you.”

She didn’t look happy about it, in fact, she looked resigned to whatever conversation she thought we were about to have, as she stepped back and motioned me inside. “What would you like to talk about?”

“You. Me. Us.” It was as simple and as complicated as that.

Emily shook her head and wiped a hand down her face. “There is no us, remember? It’s how you wanted it.”

“It’s not what I wanted,” I answered through clenched teeth. “It’s just the way things have to be.”

“Bullshit.”

I couldn’t help the smile that touched my lips at her words. “You’re right, as usual, and you’re wrong—also as usual.” I made my way to the kitchen with the pizza and wine.
